1770-1835. Scottish novelist and poet, known
as the `Ettrick Shepherd'. Born in Ettrick
Forest, Selkirkshire, he worked as a shepherd
at Yarrow 1790-99, and until the age of 30,
he was illiterate. His novel Confessions of a
Justified Sinner 1824 is a masterly portrayal
of personified evil.
